Lausanne is Switzerland's cultural capital. Located 60 kilometers north of Geneva, Lausanne is home to people whose mother tongue is French. It is the capital of Vaud district. The lake Geneva provides a picturesque backdrop to this city built in the Roman times. Lausanne is famous for its vineyards, as well as its annual bicycle marathon. Lausanne is a city of festivals, the major ones being the annual Lausanne City festival and the Bach festival, dedicated to the celebrated composer. It has no less than fifteen museums, including the Museum of History and the Olympic Museum. There is also a Science Museum that is highly entertaining apart from being educational, and is very popular with children. In the afternoon, you will be taken to Chillon after a brief stopover in Montreux and Vevey. Vevey's beautiful vineyards are supposed to be the best in the duchy of Vaud. Montreax is famous for its jazz festivals and many music nights held in the summer. In Chillon, you will visit the Chillon Castle, on the shores of the lovely Lake Geneva. The oldest wing of the castle was built 1000 years ago, while the other 24 wings were added later a different points of time. Lord Byron was inspired by its forbidding Gothic architecture to write the poem narrating the story of the "Prisoner of Chillon".
