The Basel zoo was the first zoological garden in Switzerland. It is now a home to some 6000 animals belonging to some 600 species. It is one of the most visited and attractive zoos in Europe after the Rhine fall at Schaffhausen. The most striking feature about this zoological Garden is that the animals are housed with understanding and live in societies appropriate to the habitats of their species. Many animals have indoor and outdoor enclosures and their houses are built based on some themes like The Ape House, The Bird House, Vivarium and the Etoscha. The animals are well cared for indigenous in an appropriately park like setting. The zoo in Basel has an excellent record of successful animal breeding such as Gorillas, Rhinoceroses, Proboscis monkey, and Malayan tapir.
The zoo is easily reachable from any part of the city with out any problem. There are numerous parking spaces near the zoo. The zoo remains open throughout the year. It works closely with local universities to educate people and emphasize a scientific approach to the husbandry of its stock. The authorities of the zoo developed extensive educational programs for school children and advance students.
