How to reach
By car : Take the car from Neuchatel via Rochefort - Noiraigue, or from Pontarlier via less Verrières - St. Sulpice - Travers.
By train : Take regional train on the Neuchatel-Buttes line. Take care as only few trains stop at the Site de la Presta stop.
Come and experience the 300 years old journey of brave miners from 1712 to 1986 , whose hard work brought a precious mineral out of the mountain named natural Asphalt. The length of these impressive galleries and chambers amounts to over 100 km. Huge quantities of this water proof material is exported to all over the world. Asphalt Mines of La Presta are now a day open to the public and is one of the most exciting voyages to the centre of the earth. The Adjacent Asphalt Museum is also a major attraction among the visitors , as it tells the story of old days to the present time in a very interesting and pleasant way with the help of pictures, written explanations , tools and machines used by them. In the Café des Mines, visitors will be able to appreciate the meals that the miners used to prepare on special occasions. An outdoor picnic area is also available. The mines offer guided tours from 1st April to 20th October daily at 10.30 and 14.30. Visitors can enjoy extra tours in the months of July and August at 12.30 to 16.30. From 21st October to 31st March tours take place on Sundays at 12.30 and 14.30.
