Major tourist attractions in Schweizer Mittelland, Switzerland

Fribourg the capital of the canton with the same name is surrounded on three sides by the River Saane. It is one of the largest medieval towns of Üechtland with over 200 unique gothic facades from 15th century that add more charm to the Old Town. Among the various tourist attractions the most impressive is the Cathedral of Freiburg that is quite famous for its beautiful stained glass windows. Built in 1283 and dedicated to St. Nicholas it boasts a 74 m high tower that offers fantastic panoramic views of the surroundings to the visitors. One of the favorite destination for art lovers in Fribourg is the “Escape Jean Tinguely et Niki de saint Phalle”. The other major attractions of the town include Fri-art Gallery that displays the modern art, the Puppet Museum which is a great hit among the children and The highly educational Natural History Museum that is worthy of a visit. The other most fascinating site for the visitors of Fribourg is the lake side village of Gletterens dated back to the 3000 B.C. The most interesting fact about this village is that it brings the prehistoric past back to life which is quite evident in its clay houses and straw roves. The special Museum of Romont is the Swiss Glass Museum that exhibits works of art that have been created on and behind the glass. The other major attraction of Romont is that it houses the world’s largest collection of the Medieval Glass. Tourists can also enjoy an excursion to Hauterive Abbey, a Cistercian Abbey founded in 1137, was once a stopping place on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.
