The abbey of Romanmotier is an outstanding example of Roman art in Switzerland. The abbey is the largest and oldest roman church in the country.
This spectacular building was constructed between 990 and 1028 by Cluniac monks, over the ruins of two previous abbeys dating back to the 5th and 6th centuries. The two-storey forey were built in the 12th century, there are also some fine 14th century Gothic columns, frescoes and murals in the narthex and chancel. The abbey of Romainmotier is a must visit for those who enjoy history and great arcitecture.
The house of the priors (La Maison du Prieur) one of the last 2,000 surviving monastery palaces in Romainmôtier. Built in the middle ages ,along the main roads in Europe, it was designed to host important guests of the Father superior. After a long period of decline and disregard , Today the building is classed as a national monument. The structure has been conserved and restored to its former glory.
