Vallorbe
The fort , built between 1939 and 1945 , is a great example of pre world war 2nd fortification.The fort was built to protect Col de Jougne and to keep a watch on the German patrol on top of Mount d’or.
The fortress consists of three smaller forts connected by underground tunnels and are equiped with machine guns.The fort comprises of an observation post, a machinery room , a provisions store and also provided shelter for upto 130 men. The place is equiped as fully functional war fort ,the facilities included an artillery posts, telephones , an operations room, a hospital, a kitchen with dining space and sleeping quarters.
Guided walking tours are available for visitors who wants to have a deeper exploration of the fortress.Visitors participating in the tour are avvised to wear good hiking shoes.
Opening hours:
The fortress of Pre-Giroud is open in the months of april till october.
How to get there: By car: The "semi-motorway" upto Vallorbe and further follow the brown signs ,that marks the way to the fortress, from the village entrance.
There is a car park near the entrance of the Fortress.
On foot: A 15 minutes hike from the Vallorbe train station.the hiking trails are marked and leads to the main entrance of the fort.
