Basel is the home of Switzerland's largest ethnological and folk art collections. Founded in 1849, The Ethnological Museum in Basel is the largest in Switzerland. It provides a home to the grandest collection of the treasures bought to Basel from European and Non European cultural life by scientists, travelers and merchants. Comprehensive programms of events and permanent exhibitions of ceramics, religious folk art and traditions associated to the masks communicate the museum’s work to a wide audience. The largest museum of its kind the museum has 300,000 objects and about the same number of historic photographs and artifacts. The body responsible for museum is the canton of Basel-Stadt on whose behalf the museum preserves documents and cultural legacy. The museum remains open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm.
