Location : Grande-Dixence (Valais)
The Grand Dixence dam is the tallest concrete dam in the world with a height of 285m and storage capacity of 400 million m3. The artificial lake is about 5 km long. Visitors can take the services of a cable car or walk along the natural path by the lake to go inside the lake. The ibex path is only open from the beginning of July to October due to its high altitude. Most of the water comes from glaciers which melt during the summers. The lake is usually full of water by late September, and is allowed to empty during the winter reaching its lowest point around April. The trek which takes about 4 hours, leads visitors through some varied and colorful flora.
