Route : The journey by train starts from St. Moritz - Chur - Oberalp Pass - Brig - Zermatt
The Glacier Express is probably the most scenic train rides of Europe. It is a narrow gauge train which takes 7½ hours to cover a distance of about 290 km with an average of 24 mph on its most popular route, from Zermatt to St. Moritz or vice versa. This fabulous train excursion is operating since 1930 and has the honor to be the world’s slowest express train. This fantastic train journey unfolds many panoramic sightseeing windows while enjoying your lunch with Swiss white wine. During the journey the train crosses 291 bridges, and viaducts, run over 91 tunnels and climb to the 2,033 m high Oberalp pass. The Glacier Express is run jointly by two private Swiss railways, the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB) and the Rhatische Bahn (RhB) which also operates the regular local trains and freight trains over the same route. The express train runs 4 times a day in summers and once in winters in each direction. To enjoy the journey in this express Glacier prior reservation is necessary.
