The old town of Fribourg boasts to be one of the most splendid examples of medieval architecture in Europe. With over two hundred 15th century gothic facades, the town has magnificently preserved its old world charm and medieval character. Located at the junction of the German and French speaking parts of Switzerland, Fribourg has beautifully blended two equally rich languages and cultures.
Fribourg was founded by the Dukes of Zähringen in 1157.It is the capital of the canton of the same name.
The Old town is listed as a historical center. The narrow cobbled lanes, the numerous statue fountains and beautiful squares make the old town a fascinating experience.
The older part of Fribourg, called The Bourg, is located higher up above the River Saane.
The magnificent preserved fort with 14 towers and a wall surrounding the city are a unique sight. The 74 meters high unfinished tower of the St. Nicholas Cathedral adorns the city’s skyline. Built between 13th and 15th century, the cathedral is testimony to almost 600 years of history. The building is home to an organ built by Aloys Mooser. The cathedral also houses the fabulous stained glass windows by Polish painter Jozef Mehoffer and French painter Alfred Manessier. The tower is accessible by a flight of 368 steps. The top of the tower gives an amazing view of the whole town.
