The name Schaffhausen is probably derived from the skiff house along the river bank. The town of Schaffhausen is the northern most corner of Switzerland in the knee of Rhine on the border of Germany. The city has small but beautiful Altstadt (Old Town) whose charm lies in its extraordinary preservation of late Gothic, Baroque and Rococo architectures. Here shops and restaurants lined where lively crowds of shoppers and strollers throng the city streets. The Old town is considered to be one of the prettiest in the Switzerland and is also famous for St. Johann Church with its remarkable acoustics. The town of Schaffhausen owes the origins of the Rheinfall which is the biggest waterfalls in Europe and is one of the major tourist attractions. The other landmark of the town is Munnot fortress that can be seen from the miles. This ring shaped stronghold was built between 1564 and 1589 and was designed by Albrechat Dürer. Every evening at 9 pm , the Munot guard who lives in the town rings the Munot bells which is an indication that the town gates and inns should close. The northern area of Schaffhausen is hilly region of the Randen and the vine clad slopes of Klettgau which is famous for Trasadingen Wine trails. The other major attraction on the way is the museum of Viticulture in Hallau. The riverside landscape along the Rhine is quite famous among the visitors due to cycling, boating and walking trails. The 50 Km long boating trip from Untersee Lake –Rhine boat trip from Schaffhausen to Kreuzlingen is other major visit place on a sightseeing trip to Schaffhausen. The location between the Black Forest and Lake Constance is absolutely stunning and among the major tourist attractions. A trip to Schaffhausen is a good combination of culture and nature.
