Isolated from St. Gallen by the ridge of green hills, Appenzell is one of the Switzerland’s quieter regions. It is the capital of Appenzell Innerrhoden, the canton which is famous for its rural customs and traditions and has lowest population density. Appenzell is famous for its houses which are richly decorated with facades, the ceremonial descend of the cattle in autumn and cultural events such as folk music, rustic dances and Alpstein region. The region is ideal for leisurely walking tours or for browsing many shops offering local products. The major attraction of the town is Appenzell Museum that is dedicated to Appenzall’s rich history and culture which strongly reflects its rich and varied culture. It has a dense network of hiking trails crisscrosses the hilly landscape of Appenzell. Among them the Alpstein region situated at the height of 2500 m has the rock formations that lend a challenge to the hikers and climbers. In winters the Kronberg Hoher Kasten and Ebenalp-Schwende are the popular ski areas for families. A cable way that operates between Wasserauen to Ebenalp is the gateway to the hiking region of the Alpstein. Eberalp is a paradise for paragliding and is a starting point for hiking on to the Säntis summit. Appenzell has a dense network of rambling trails, including experience trails such as the barefoot trails near Gonten that enables the visitors to experience the nature at its best is among the major tourist attractions of the town.
