According to many, the Zermatt Ski Resort is a perfect destination for intermediate and advanced skiers. This car-free resort is perched on an altitude of 1,620 meters above sea level and is located in southwest Switzerland. Zermatt is mainly dominated by the stunning views offered by the Matterhorn and has quite a few advantages that make it one of the most popular resorts in Switzerland. Firstly Zermatt's breathtaking scenery is one of the main reasons that draw visitors in huge numbers. Its other pluses are amazing mountain restaurants, fantastic and varied skiing (Zermatt is also linked to Cervinia in Italy), traffic free except for the electric taxis, presence of great snow high up and a glacier for all year round skiing. The non-skiers in Zermatt are suitably entertained with the presence of numerous shopping areas and masses of non-skiing activities that are always at their disposal. Besides, Zermatt has a lively nightlife along with a great cosmopolitan crowd. Lastly good accommodation and excellent boarding provisions contribute to its popularity and name as a good resort.
However, there are a number of complaints that accompany Zermatt's immense popularity. But again nothing can be perfect in every way. In Zermatt you may have to indulge in a fair amount of trekking to get to the lifts besides encountering long queues on your way up to the skiing areas. As it has been pointed out before, beginners don't have much of a choice in terms of skiing in Zermatt. Again, the three ski areas in Zermatt are separate and rather poorly linked. It should also be noted that the international airport is a good four hours away from the ski resort of Zermatt. By the way, the Zermatt ski resort is also very expensive and mainly attracts well-heeled visitors who are willing to spend.
But nevertheless, Zermatt has been more than often been described as 'the perfect ski destination' and 'about as complete a resort as you can find' by many. It is really difficult to ignore such plaudits that make Zermatt a must be on every skier's itinerary. But this is possible as long as the credit card can come too.
